Houston Police Department
Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 9523 Garden Bridge

October 20, 2014 - Houston police are awaiting autopsy results in an apparent murder/suicide at 9523 Garden Bridge about 12:45 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 19).

The female victim, Maribel Cruz, 43, of the above address, suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, her husband Raul Cruz, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant H. Chavez and Officer R. Lujan reported:

Mrs. Cruz and her husband were home at the above address with their two daughters. About 12:45 a.m., the daughters heard what sounded like gunshots in the house and went to investigate. Through a window, they were able to see their mother lying in bed, apparently asleep. As they had not heard any arguing, they didn't think anything was amiss and went back to bed. About 7 a.m., the eldest daughter, 20, was getting ready for work when she observed her step-father's pickup truck in the driveway. Knowing he was supposed to have left for work about 4 a.m., she went to the couple's bedroom door but found it to be locked. The daughter obtained a key, entered and found her mother and stepfather both deceased. Indications are Raul Cruz shot Maribel and then himself, however this is awaiting verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. A gun was found at the scene.
