Mayor Turner Leads Citywide Salute to Veterans

November 11, 2021 -- Today, the City of Houston came together to salute our heroes at a special Veterans Day ceremony and patriotic parade. Mayor Sylvester Turner and city council members presented Daniel P. Moran, Marine veteran and Purple Heart recipient, with a proclamation recognizing his service and valor. Moran was the featured speaker during the Veterans Day ceremony.

The event featured a 21-gun-salute and remarks by Mayor Turner, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, U.S. Representatives Shiela Jackson Lee, Al Green and Sylvia Garcia. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo also spoke at the event.

"Houston has the 2nd largest veteran population in the nation with over 250,000 veterans in residence," said Mayor Turner. "We honor and remember the extraordinary men and women who served and sacrificed to protect the freedoms we enjoy throughout our nation."

The City of Houston Mayor's Office of Veterans & Military Affairs advocates on behalf of active duty, guard/reserves, veterans, and the larger military-affiliated community (Spouse/Caregiver and dependent children) and coordinates access to resources through federal, state, and local initiatives and programs.

"As the population of veterans in Houston continues to grow and becomes even more diverse, the City will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our veterans," said Mayor Turner.
