Tree Waste/Junk Waste Pick-Up Schedules Are Changing

Effective November 2012

Continuing its efforts to maximize cost savings, provide efficient service delivery and engage in proactive customer service, the Solid Waste Management Department has taken your feedback and is improving your tree waste and junk waste collection service.

Effective November 1, 2012, the monthly tree waste/junk waste pickup date for your neighborhood will change.  Tree Waste and junk waste collection will still occur in alternating months, odd-numbered months  for tree waste ( January, March, May, July, September, November) and even-numbered months for junk waste ( February, April, June, August, October, December) on the new tree waste/junk waste pick up day designated for your neighborhood.  Please note that collection day schedules for other Solid Waste services such as garbage, yard waste trimmings and recycling collection WILL NOT change.

The service date change is made to achieve the following:

  • Less confusion with neighborhood collections schedules.
  • A single service day for major community areas.
  • Easier to read/interpret service maps for customers and 311 operators.
  • Easier management of routes.
  • Budget savings in fuel and maintenance.
  • Greater availability for department support for community-based beautification projects.

You will receive reminders by mail from the Solid Waste Management Department about your new tree waste/ junk waste pickup day.  Remember, this change only affects your tree waste/ junk waste service day.

To see the improved service maps with your new neighborhood schedule collection date, simply log onto the Solid Waste Management Department’s website at www.houstonsolidwaste.org.  While there you can also read about other solid waste services in your area.

Thank you for your support as we continue to maximize your savings.

Tree Waste / Junk Waste Collected in Alternating Months

In alternating months, residents may dispose of their Tree Waste, and Junk Waste at their curbside. This new method of collecting your large waste comes with the benefits of diverting materials that can be recycled from landfills, saving landfill space and your valuable tax dollars.?The Tree/Junk Waste schedule changes each month from Tree Waste to Junk.

Tree Waste months are January, March, May, July, September, and November. ?Tree Waste? is defined as ?clean? wood waste such as tree limbs, branches, and stumps (lumber, furniture, and treated wood will NOT be accepted).

?Junk Waste? is defined as items such as furniture, appliances, and other bulky material.?Junk Waste may not be placed for collection during a Tree Waste Month. Junk Waste months are February, April, June, August, October and December.

A maximum of four cubic yards of building material (not including brick, plaster or concrete) generated by the resident in connection with the maintenance of the resident's property and four (4) tires will be collected on your Junk Waste collection date.?

Please Note: Tree Waste is accepted during Junk Waste Months.?However, to ensure that your Tree Waste is recycled, you may hold your tree waste materials until the next Tree Waste designated month or bring it to a Neighborhood Depository.
