2nd UPDATE: Charge Upgraded on Suspect After Victim Dies in Shooting at 3525 Blodgett

September 1, 2015 - A man critically wounded at 3525 Blodgett about 9:40 p.m. on August 26 has died of his injuries and charges have been upgraded against the suspect in the case.
The suspect, Darrius Nichols (b/m, 20), is now charged with murder in the 228th State District Court.  He initially was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  A photo of Nichols is attached to this news release.
Investigators learned the male victim, Lakeytrick Quinn, 24, was pronounced dead at an area hospital two days after the shooting.  A second shooting victim, a female, was treated and released from the hospital.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Robles and Officers I. Ulloa and E. Wohlgemuth reported:
A Texas Southern University police officer responding to a disturbance in a dormitory parking lot observed a male suspect firing a gun toward a crowd.  The TSU officer then instructed the suspect to drop the gun, but the suspect turned towards the officer with the gun still in his hand.  The TSU officer discharged his duty weapon at the suspect but missed.  At that time, the suspect surrendered and was placed in custody. When the shooting stopped and the suspect was placed in custody, officers learned two individuals had been shot by the suspect.  Paramedics transported both victims to an area hospital.
Investigators were advised the female victim and the suspect are not TSU students.
As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division.
