Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 6700 Cullen Boulevard

July 11, 2016 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an armed suspect was fatally shot by HPD officers at 6700 Cullen Boulevard at about 12:40 a.m. on Saturday (July 9).

The suspect, Alva Burnett Braziel, (b/m, 38) was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers L. Lopez and E. Macias, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in this incident.  Officers Lopez and Macias were sworn in as officers in May 2003 and June 2006, respectively.  Both are assigned to the Gang Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Turner and Officer J. Nguyen reported:

Officers Lopez and Macias were on patrol near the above address in a two-man Crime Reduction Unit and came upon suspect Braziel standing in the intersection of Cullen Boulevard and Ward Street in moving lanes of traffic.  As the officers drove northbound on Cullen, they saw Braziel initially waving his hands in the air and then pointing a pistol in his right hand directly at the officers.  The officers stopped abruptly, took cover behind the open doors of their marked patrol vehicle, and gave verbal commands to Braziel to lay his weapon on the ground.  Braziel ignored repeated commands and instead raised his arms up, pointed the pistol upward and moved into different aggressive stances, as if getting ready for a fight.  Braziel then lowered his weapon and again pointed it directly at Officers Lopez and Macias.  Fearing for their lives, Officers Lopez and Macias discharged their duty weapons.  Braziel was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents inside the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
