The City of Houston SWMD and City Wide Club have sponsored three annual Trash and Treasure food drives to benefit Houston families. "Our Solid Waste employees are moved by compassion for those families traumatically affected by Katrina. We are doing our part to help by providing this special curbside collection of food and clothing to help contribute to the cause and make it easier for Houstonians to participate with its support efforts," said SWMD Director Buck Buchanan.

"Once again this is another opportunity for people helping people," said Stephanie Lewis, Citywide Club Project Director. Lewis added, "We have already been getting phone calls from Katrina victims. Many of the victims anticipated being gone from their homes for 2 to 3 days-not months. and therefore have no money for food, diapers, and clothes."

For 27 years, the City Wide Club has annually sponsored the Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve Big Feasts that are currently held at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
