August 12, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 12400 West Bellfort about 8:50 p.m. on Thursday (August 11).

The male victim's identity is pending notification to next of kin and the cause of death will be determined by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant H. M. Garcia and Officer D. Ertons reported:

The driver of a Suzuki Sports vehicle was traveling westbound on West Bellfort when the vehicle left the roadway striking a fence on the north side of the street. Bystanders noticed smoke coming from the vehicle and pulled the victim out before the vehicle became engulfed in flames. CPR was performed on the victim, however he later died at Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital. Due to the vehicle's minor damage, preliminary investigation shows the victim may have suffered a health-related problem just prior to the accident.

The investigation is continuing.
