Update on Incident at 8501 Broadway

February 1, 2005 -- Charges have been filed against a suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a man in his apartment at 8501 Broadway about 9:20 a.m. on January 13.

The suspect, identified as Luis Uriel Castillo (H/m, DOB 6-22-86), has been
charged with capital murder in the 263rd State District Court. He is wanted
in the killing of Cornelius B. Ray, 24, a student at Texas Southern
University. Castillo is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds.
Investigators believe he fled Houston, possibly to another state or Mexico.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M.O. Scott and Officer C.L. Scales reported:

Ray's friends became concerned when they had not heard from him for a few
days. After repeated phone calls went unanswered for days, friends went to
Ray's apartment complex and asked the manager to check on his welfare. Upon
entering the apartment, they discovered Ray's body on the bedroom floor with
blunt trauma to the head. Ray's friends last spoke with him on Sunday,
January 9. He advised them he was getting together with someone he had met on
an Internet chat room.

The motive in Ray's murder appears to be robbery.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Luis Uriel Castillo is urged to
contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at
713-222-TIPS.
