Neighborhood Protection Increases Spanish Speaking Outreach

February 15, 2005 -- The Neighborhood Protection Corps (NPC) of the Houston Police Department graduated a group of community service inspectors from a four-week long conversational Spanish class. The graduation was held at 3:30 p.m. today at the Ripley House, 4410 Navigation. Each graduating inspector gave a speech in Spanish that he/she was required to prepare.

This training will allow Neighborhood Protection inspectors to interact more closely with the community. While traditionally only inspectors that spoke Spanish were assigned to Spanish speaking areas, the need for bilingual inspectors has increased. NPC can now serve the community by eliminating nuisances and blight with more ease because these inspectors can now communicate with citizens who might not be aware of their violations or who might not speak or understand English.

NPC's goals are to work closely with the community and its citizens to eliminate nuisance situations. NPC also provides informational literature in Spanish to incorporate the need to the Spanish speaking community.
