Incident at 3600 Hastings

June 10, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating the suicide of a sexual assault suspect who fatally shot himself in the presence of police officers in the 3600 block of Hastings about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday (June 9).

The suspect, Manuel Castro Gonzalez (H/m, DOB 6-16-49), was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J.T. Wyers and Officer T. Tyler reported:

One of the suspect's adult daughters said she had been sexually molested by her father, allegedly for the last six years. Last evening, Gonzalez threatened one of his daughters at gunpoint and attempted to sexually assault her. After police were called, officers learned Gonzalez was armed and that he intended to kill the daughter and her family if she told anyone of his intentions. Gonzalez's vehicle was located in the area the daughter had advised officers he would be traveling to. Gonzalez became suspicious as an officer in a marked patrol unit followed his vehicle. When another officer arrived for back up, the officers attempted a felony traffic stop based on the information supplied by family members. At that time, Gonzalez shot himself while inside his vehicle.

The HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions are investigating the death since it occurred in the presence of police officers.
