April 19, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 23300 block of the Eastex Freeway about 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday (April 18).

The victim has been identified as Derek Anderson, 20, of New Caney, Texas. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant N. Nguyen and Officer D. Ertons reported:

A red Geo Tracker jeep was southbound on the Eastex Freeway service road when the driver of the vehicle entered the freeway by illegally driving over the curb and median. The driver then lost control of the jeep and swerved into the path of an 18-wheeler. After impact, both persons inside the jeep were ejected, killing Anderson and injuring the other male who was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. A black Nissan Sentra, traveling next to the 18-wheeler, was also struck. The female driver of the Sentra was transported to Kingwood Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
