Incident at 3900 Leeland

August 1, 2006 -- Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested following the robbery of a man at 3900 Leeland about 11:30 a.m. on Monday (July 31).

The suspect, Johnny Bernard Davis (b/m, DOB: 10/31/56), has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 178th State District Court. The victim, David Brodsky, 49, was not injured.

HPD Officer S.C. Freeman, sworn in as an officer in May of 1993 and assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division, discharged his weapon at the suspect, missing him.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W.P. Booth and Officer A.D. Brown reported:

The victim was in the business parking lot in the 3900 block of Leeland when suspect Davis robbed him at gunpoint. The victim then ran into the business at 3914 Leeland and notified off-duty HPD Officer Freeman, who was in uniform and working an extra job. The officer went out to the parking lot and saw the suspect in a red SUV, revving the engine. The suspect accelerated towards the officer and was reaching for something in the passenger's seat. Knowing the suspect was armed, Officer Freeman fired at the suspect, who fled the location west on Leeland. An HPD sergeant who heard the shots and observed the off-duty officer running, followed the suspect and advised units over the police radio. The suspect was stopped and arrested a few miles away from the location.
