Incident at 500 West Mount Houston

June 18, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating the shooting of a man at 500 West Mount Houston about 4:10 p.m. on Saturday (June 17).

The victim is identified as Bertin Gonzalez Jr., 17, of 11500 Green Plaza #709. He suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M.D. Newcomb and Officer T. Huynh reported:

According to witnesses, Gonzalez was driving a vehicle, occupied by two friends, westbound in the 500 block of West Mount Houston when he pulled a handgun out of the glove compartment. He began playing with the weapon and pulled the trigger several times, but the gun did not fire. Gonzalez then chambered a round, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger again shooting himself. The vehicle's passengers were able to maneuver the vehicle to a stop in a parking lot and call for assistance.
