One of Two Suspects Arrested, Charged in 1998 Sexual Assault

June 21, 2006 -- Investigators in the Houston Police Homicide Division's Sex Crimes Unit have arrested one of two suspects in the sexual assault of a woman in October 1998.

The suspect, identified as Donnie Lamont Young (b/m, DOB 9-10-81), was arrested at his residence about 3 p.m. on Wednesday (Jun. 14). He has been charged with aggravated sexual assault in the 248th State District Court. Young is charged in the brutal attack of a 41 year-old woman as she returned to her apartment in the 11300 block of Fondren about 11 p.m. on October 25, 1998.

HPD Officer K.L. McMurtry of the Sex Crimes Unit reported:

Five days after she was kidnapped, driven to a remote location and sexually assaulted by two suspects, the female victim went to the Fondren Patrol Division to report she saw the suspects who had assaulted her walking in the area. An officer located the men and took them into custody. After the female positively identified both suspects, the Harris County District Attorney's office accepted charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault against the suspects, Gregory Adams, 17, and Josiah Sutton, 16. Adams had his case dismissed weeks later and Sutton was convicted in the case. Following an appeal, Sutton was released in 2004 after DNA retests excluded him as a suspect in the case.

In early May 2006, investigators learned that CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) had established Donnie Young's DNA matched the forensic evidence from the female victim's clothing. Following that new CODIS information, a court order was received calling for a confirmation on the CODIS hit. A second, newer DNA sample was obtained from Donnie Young on May 24 and submitted for that second confirmation effort. It was learned on June 9 that the CODIS hit had been confirmed and that Donnie Young was one of two contributors of the forensic evidence found on the victim's clothing. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Young and arrested him on June 14. He has not denied involvement in the sexual assault, claiming he does not recall if he was involved in the attack or not. The other unidentified wanted suspect is an unknown black male, now in the 25 to 28-year-old range (late teens in 1998).

At the time of the sexual assault, he had a medium build and medium weight.
The suspect probably used or was actually named "Dee-kee" (sp?) and was an associate of Young's in the southwest side / Fondren area of the city.

Anyone with information on the remaining wanted suspect in this 1998 case is urged to contact the HPD Sex Crimes Unit at 713-308-1180 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
