November 17, 2006 -- The fatal shooting of a man at 10211 Sugar Branch on Thursday (November 16) at 7:25 p.m. will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin. He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M.D. Newcomb and Officer A. Mares reported:

The homeowner, Carla McKinnie, 37, was in her apartment when the victim came over to discuss personal matters. Ms. McKinnie felt threatened by some of the statements the victim was making. It appears the victim acted as if he had a gun in his jacket. Ms. McKinnie produced a weapon and fired one time at the victim. The victim was struck in the chest, walked to the parking lot and collapsed. He was found unarmed.

Ms. McKinnie gave her statement to investigators, and upon consultation with the Harris County District Attoney's office, it was decided this case would be referred to a Harris County Grand Jury.
