Incident at 5400 Oakhaven Lane

September 23, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating an incident in which an off-duty University of Houston police officer discharged his weapon at a theft suspect at 5400 Oakhaven Lane about 11:50 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 21).

The unknown suspect fled on foot and is not in custody. The officer, Corporal D. Martinez, was not injured.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants M. Cruz and L.A. Flores reported:

HPD officers responded to a shots fired, suspicious person call and determined an off-duty University of Houston police officer had fired his weapon at a theft suspect who the officer believed had fired a weapon at him. Officers were told the suspect jumped a rear wooden fence and was last seen running south from the location. Patrol officers and an HPD K-9 unit searched for the suspect, but could not locate him. The suspect is not believed to be injured.

The suspect is described only as a black male wearing a white muscle shirt and black shorts.
