Traffic Incident at Southwest Freeway

April 27, 2007 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at the Southwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 59 South) and the East Freeway (Interstate 10 East) about 12:10 a.m. today (Apr.27).

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to next of kin by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant P. Casares and Officer L. Morrison reported:

An 18-wheeler was traveling southbound on Highway 59, taking the ramp to the I-10 East Freeway eastbound, when the vehicle rolled over and burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic remained closed for about four hours due to the investigation. At this time, most lanes have reopened with the exception of the ramp from Highway 59 southbound to I-10 East Freeway eastbound. The ramp from I-10 eastbound to Highway 59 northbound remains closed.

The investigation is continuing.
