Traffic Incident at 5400 East Freeway

March 15, 2007 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 5400 block of the East Freeway (I-10 East) service road about 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday (March 14).

The male victim’s identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant M. W. Bearden and Officer S. Martinez reported:

A commercial vehicle was stopped at a red light on the East Freeway eastbound service road at Lockwood. The driver observed the victim pushing a shopping cart across the street at the crosswalk as he waited on the red light. When the light turned green, the driver proceeded to turn right onto Lockwood after not seeing the pedestrian. Upon completing the turn, the driver noticed in his rearview mirror the shopping cart and pedestrian in the roadway.

Investigators have not determined if the driver or pedestrian is at fault for failure to yield the right of way. No charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation is continuing.
