Investigation into Male's Death at 2709 Broadway

July 20, 2015 - Houston police are awaiting autopsy results in the death of a man that occurred at 2709 Broadway about 5:35 p.m. on Saturday (July 18).

The identity of the male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant B. Harris and Senior Police Officer P. Vela reported:

A patrol officer was inside a convenience store at the above address when the suspect entered and was bleeding from the head.  The officer attempted to assist the suspect, who became combative and was showing signs of mental distress.  As the officer tried to get the suspect medical attention, the suspect charged the officer, who then radioed for assistance.  Arriving officers also attempted to talk to and aid the suspect, but he also charged at them, so the suspect was restrained.    Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and began attending to the suspect when he went from fighting to suddenly being non-responsive.  The suspect was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Witnesses stated the male was injured prior to entering the above location and HPD officers made multiple attempts to calm the suspect in order for him to be treated for his injuries.

As is customary in in-custody deaths, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
