CITY OPENS HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITY IN NORTH HOUSTON

August 13, 2003 - The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will open the North Environmental Service Center on Thursday, August 14, 2003. This household hazardous waste facility, located at 5614 Neches, Building C, will open to Houston residents every 2nd Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m..

"Household hazardous waste or residential electronic scrap items should not be placed on the curb with or in your container for collection with garbage or heavy trash pickup," said SWMD Director Thomas "Buck" Buchanan. Buchanan adds, "Through grant funds from the TCEQ and HGAC, we are pleased to provide a more convenient location to Houston residents who live in the north Houston and Kingwood area to properly dispose and recycle their common household chemicals."

The Environmental Service Center (ESC) provides a drive through, drop-off location for Houston residents to bring their household hazardous waste such as anti-freeze, batteries, fuel, oil, paint, pesticides and other household cleaners. Residential electronic scrap items (monitors, CPUs, televisions, VCRs, etc) will also be accepted.

The ESC can accept most household hazardous wastes. However, there are some materials the ESC cannot accept. These include: ammunition, explosives, medical wastes, radioactive wastes (smoke detectors), wastes from businesses, and compressed gas cylinders.

The South Environmental Service Center, 11500 South Post Oak, is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For more information, call the Household Hazardous Waste Line on 713.551.7355 or click on www.houstonsolidwaste.org.

The Solid Waste Management Department provides solid waste services to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.
