Our Initiatives - 2024 Digital Symposium

On February 3rd, 74 people ranging from teachers, tutors, volunteers, program directors, wrap around agencies and Pk-12 districts braved a stormy morning to attend MOAL’s 1st Annual Digital Symposium – The Future of Adult Literacy event.

Sponsored by COMCAST and supported through partnerships with the Houston Public Library, Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning, the Texas Workforce Commision, Harris County Department of Education, the event consisted of general sessions and special topic breakout sessions.

The opening session highlight featured panelists representing both the non-profit and for-profit sectors sharing their perspectives and insights regarding digital literacy as 21st century currency.

Breakout sessions provided training and hands-on experiences with digital curriculum, VR and AR teaching tools, social media and marketing development, and the launch of strategic planning for adult literacy sustainability in Houston conducted by MOAL’s Director, Federico Salas-Isnardi.

During lunch, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia shared a message about the pros and cons of AI, and about how we must enthusiastically but cautiously move forward with technology access and education.

Overwhelmingly positive responses to sessions like the much in demand “Digital Upskilling for Adult Literacy Learners presented by Blacks At Microsoft, along with feedback requests for more, reflect that this event meets the current and future need for digital literacy training and support for education service providers in our city and beyond.
