Smoke Detectors Can Save Your Life

A Working Smoke Detector Can Save Your Life" PosterAs part of the continuing effort to raise awareness and save lives, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) has partnered with State Farm to remind citizens of the importance of having a working smoke detector in the home.

One of every three residential fires in Houston reported the home had a malfunctioning smoke detector, or no smoke detector at all.

Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds. Although most fires are preventable, they do happen, and a working smoke detector gives you and your family the extra minutes needed to safely get out of your home.

HFD recommends residents check, change, and replace: Check batteries at least once a month. Change batteries when you set your clocks forwards and backwards for daylight saving time. And completely replace smoke detectors at least once every 10 years. Citizens may also purchase new 10-year smoke detectors from their local retailer which run on lithium 10-year batteries that never need to be replaced.

Citizens may also contact the HFD Public Affairs Office at 832-394-6633.
