Mayor's Office Press Release

Mayor Turner Thanks Commissioner Ellis for Investing in city of Houston Street Improvements

March 13, 2018 -- Mayor Turner today thanked Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis for announcing a $30 million program to improve seven streets located in the city of Houston near the University of Houston and Texas Southern University corridor.

The commissioner’s Complete Streets project will improve safety and accessibility to pedestrians, bicyclists, motorist and transit riders.

The Complete Streets program complements Mayor Turner’s Complete Communities initiative, which improves neighborhoods so that all of Houston’s residents and business owners can have access to quality services and amenities.

“I am grateful and excited to see Commissioner Ellis bring his program of making streets safer and more attractive near the University of Houston and Texas Southern University,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said. “The city already has taken some steps to improve sidewalks and mobility in the Third Ward area, and this program is an example of the county and city working together for the 2.3 million constituents we share.”

In addition to roadway work, the project includes drainage improvements, which will help reduce street flooding during heavy-rain events.

METRO Chair Carrin Patman attended Tuesday's announcement and also applauded the project.

“METRO is excited to support this important initiative which demonstrates the innovative approach of Harris County and the City of Houston to invest in infrastructure that improves quality of life. METRO is committed to this mission and we look forward to collaborating with the city and county as we explore potential investments to enhance our region,” said Patman.

More information about the city-county partnership may be located on the Harris County Precinct One website.
