Cultural Affairs Office

Grants and Funding

The City of Houston has a number of strategies it uses to invest in arts and culture for the benefit of the City’s residents and to attract visitors. One of those strategies is funding the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) and art grants to organizations with Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) dedicated to the arts. A complete description of the City’s current cultural strategies can be found beginning on page 31 of the Arts and Cultural Plan. MOCA also works closely with the five Cultural Districts in Houston: Arts District Houston, Midtown Cultural Arts & Entertainment District, Theater District Houston, Houston Museum District, East End Cultural District.

Houston has a service contract for support, advancement and promotion of the arts to directly enhance and promote tourism and the convention and hotel industry by providing ongoing support for the City’s artists and cultural institutions and providing technical assistance and support to artists and qualified small, emerging, minority, and mid-sized cultural arts organizations and to further the arts environment through the development of new initiatives. Learn more about City funding for nonprofit organizations and artists through Houston Arts Alliance (all disciplines) and Miller Outdoor Theater (performing arts).

The City of Houston is deeply invested in fostering an environment in which art and culture can flourish for the sharing and benefit all residents and visitors. Below are Mayor Turner’s strategies for arts and culture as it relates to the 5 complete communities pilot neighborhoods.
