
NON-CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTER/EMT TRAINEE
Requirements for Eligibility to take a Non-Certified Firefighter/EMT Trainee Civil Service Exam:
- Fifteen (15) accredited college hours OR
- Two (2) years of full-time active military service with an honorable discharge, or has served in imminent danger
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age when applying and less than thirty-six (36) years of age before receiving the oath of office.
- Driving Record: 2 or less moving violations in the last 36 months.
- A Non-Certified Firefighter/EMT Trainee cadet academy is made up of members that do not have a background as a firefighter or an emergency medical technician. Non-Certified cadets will be required to complete a Fire (basic) certification and EMT (Basic) certification with the Houston Fire Department. Non-Certified Cadet Training is approximately 9 months.
CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTER AND/OR EMT TRAINEE
Requirements for Certified Firefighter/EMT Trainee:
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection (FIRE) Certification - Basic or Higher AND/OR Texas Department of State Health Services (EMT) Certification – Basic or Higher.
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age when applying and less than thirty-six (36) years of age before receiving the oath of office.
- Driving Record: 2 or less moving violations in the last 36 months.
- A Certified Firefighter/EMT cadet academy is made up of members who are State of Texas Firefighters and a Texas Department of State Health Services EMT Basic or Higher.
Certified Cadet training is based on what certifications you have:
- Both Fire & EMT certification – approximately 6 weeks,
- Fire certification – approximately 3 months,
- EMT certification- approximately 6 months.
HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMON DISQUALIFIERS
- No Class A or Felony convictions or court-ordered supervision or probation.
- A dishonorable or other discharge based on misconduct which bars future military service.
