Detective Ed Jones was killed in the line of duty on September 13, 1929. The detective was killed in front of his own house and by own his own gun. He was killed by his brother-in-law, Johnnie Wilson. Ed Jones was one, of if not the first black detectives in the Houston Police Department.

According to witnesses, the shooting did not take place after a dispute of any kind. It is unclear as to what the motive of the shooting was but appeared to be in regards to a case the detective was working on. Wilson had followed Sylvia Jones, wife of the detective, home after coming from Wilson's home. The detective was on a couch in his pajamas with his pistol on the floor beside him.

Detective Jones had left the room and gone to the bathroom when Wilson picked up the pistol and then ran from the house. Jones realizing the pistol was missing followed Wilson outside. Wilson shot him as Jones approached him. Two shots from his 45 caliber pistol hit him; one in the chest and the other in the right leg.

Detective Jones died in his wife's arms outside of their home. A lengthy investigation ensued involving two city detectives and an investigator from the District Attorney's office. After the investigation was completed the suspect was charged with the murder of Detective Ed Jones.
