At 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 1973, in the 6700 block of Telephone Road, Officer Antonio Guzman and Officer Bradley Mills, stopped a car because they noticed it had defective tail lights.
Officer Guzman and Officer Mills walked up to the driver's side window and noticed a water pipe, the type used to smoke marijuana or hashish, and several rounds of ammunition in the car. Believing there could also be a gun in the car, Officer Guzman asked the suspect where his gun was. The suspect then drew a small caliber pistol and opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Guzman. Both Guzman and Mills fired several rounds at the suspect, wounding him. The suspect managed to run to a nearby gas station on the corner, and continued to return fire. He then fell to the ground in the parking lot of the gas station.
Officer Guzman was rushed to a nearby hospital, but passed away before arrival. At the time of his death, Officer Guzman was survived by his wife, Candice Guzman; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio Guzman, Sr.; son, John P. Guzman; sisters, Arny Oranday and Cathy Gutierrez; and brother William Guzman.
