Twenty-two-year-old Police Officer Dawn S. Erickson struck and killed Sunday, December 24, 1995 as she directed traffic for Christmas services at a southwest Houston church.
The officer was raced to Ben Taub Hospital in extremely critical condition and died during surgery for massive head injuries. She had just finished her four-month probation period with the department and had graduated from the Academy in March.
Erickson was working off-duty controlling traffic in the 2900 block of Hillcroft near the Unity Church of Christianity at 6:45 p.m. when she was struck by a car. The driver of the Honda Accord stated that she only saw a red light flickering in the street. Officer Erickson was struck with the left front of the vehicle and thrown into the vehicle's windshield and then and additional twelve foot into the air and onto the pavement. She was transported to Ben Taub General hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.
Erickson worked out of the South-Central substation. She was survived by her father David Erickson, her mother and step father Beth and Scott Green, brother Christopher, sisters Deanna Nixon and husband Brent, Nicole Erickson; half-sister Stephanie Liming and husband Jim; niece Faith and nephew Colby.
Visitation was held from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Earthman oat 12555 South Kirkwood on Wed. December 27, 1995. Funeral Services were conducted at Sugar Creek Baptist Church on 13213 Southwest Freeway at 10 a.m. in Thursday December 28. Burial followed at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
