Officer G.Q. Gonzalez was killed early Sunday, February 28, 1960, after his patrol car collided with another car at Pease and Chenvert. Gonzalez was driving west on Pease when his patrol car was struck in the side by a car driven by V.E. Bryant. Mr. Bryant, uninjured, was jailed for questioning. Accident investigators said the officer's car careened into a utility pole, sheering it. A witness, L.B. Tompkins, 39, of Hempstead, who was driving behind Gonzales, said the officer "jumped" a red light at Pease and Chenvert when the collision occurred. Gonzalez reportedly suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries.
Officer Gonzalez, 28, had been with the Houston Police Department since December of
1957. Officer G.Q. Gonzalez is survived by his wife, Irene Gonzalez; son Gonzalo Gonzalez,
Jr.; daughters, Karen and Lisa Gonzalez; parents Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Gonzalez; brother, Mario Gonzalez; and sisters, Carmen Samaniego, Delta Dia, Emma de la Garza, and Eva Trevino.
