On May 24, 1998 Sergeant Kent Kincaid and his wife were in their family car when shortly after I pm something struck the windshield, thrown by a car coming from the opposite direction.
Some damage occurred to the windshield as a result of the object hitting it. They were on Forest Heights not far from home when he turned around on the vehicle and began to follow it. Kincaid followed the truck for about four blocks and watched it turn onto Plum Forest. The pickup pulled into a driveway and Sgt. Kincaid stopped his vehicle. The driver backed out of the driveway and pulled around next to Sgt. Kincaid's vehicle. When this occurred Sgt. Kincaid got out of his car and approached the occupants inside the vehicle. He then identified himself as a Police Officer. At that moment, someone inside the pickup fired one shot at the officer and striking him in the head.

The vehicle then speeds away leaving Sgt. Kincaid, who was unarmed, bleeding in the street. His wife screamed for help for him where neighbors then called for an ambulance. Sgt. Kincaid was rushed to Herman Hospital but died shortly after reaching the hospital.

Unknown to Sgt. Kincaid, the suspects had shot at his vehicle with a 25-caliber pistol. This they had done for no apparent reason. It was also learned that they were a trio of young robbers who had just robbed three people before shooting at Kincaid's car. The suspects were apprehended within a couple of days of the shooting and admitted their involvement in the shooting and the robberies. The suspect, Anthony Hayes, 19, who shot Sgt. Kent Kincaid said he shot Sgt Kincaid after he identified himself as a police officer. He was charged with Capital Murder and two counts of aggravated robbery. The two other juveniles in the car were charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.

Sgt. Kent D. Kincaid was a 13-year veteran of the Houston Police Department. He was 40 years old and was assigned to the night shift at the Westside Command Station. Bradford recalled Sgt. Kincaid, who had worked with some ten years before. He said, "He was a kind of person and a real gentleman. I feel a piece of me taken away. "
