Investigation into Incident at 7800 North Loop West

March 13, 2017 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of a robbery suspect by an off-duty HPD officer that occurred at 7800 North Loop West at about 9:25 p.m. last Friday (March 10).

The male suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was later located at St. Joseph's Medical Center.

HPD Officer G. Olvera, who discharged his weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Olvera was sworn in as an officer in March 2009 and is assigned to the Downtown Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant H. Chavez reported:

Officer Olvera was off-duty at a gym in the 900 block of Mercury Road when he was approached by a female member of the gym, who stated she had been robbed as she walked to her car.  The victim then directed Officer Olvera to a white Dodge Ram pickup truck fleeing the parking lot.  Officer Olvera grabed his gym bag, containing his off-duty weapon and his police identification, got into his personal vehicle and followed the suspect vehicle in an attempt to stop him.

Officer Olvera caught up to the suspect vehicle at the intersection of the East Freeway (East Interstate Highway 10) and Normandy, pulled up to the driver's side of the suspect vehicle, identified himself as a police officer and gave the suspect verbal commands to stop the vehicle.  The suspect then raised his hand as if he had a weapon.  Fearing for his life and believing he was about to be shot, Officer Olvera discharged his weapon at the suspect.  The suspect vehicle then fled at a high rate of speed on the North Loop West.

Officer Olvera continued to pursue the suspect until the suspect exited at North Wayside and struck a Metro bus.  The impact caused the suspect vehicle to spin around and come to a stop in a grassy area of the freeway exit.  Officer Olvera exited his vehicle and gave verbal commands to the suspect to show his hands.  The suspect's hands came up holding an unknown object.  Again, fearing for his life, Officer Olvera discharged his weapon at the suspect.  It was unclear at that time if the suspect was struck by the gunfire.  The suspect then exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.  Officer Olvera exited his vehicle and searched in and around the suspect's vehicle, but was unable to locate him.  It is believed the suspect may have been picked up by another vehicle along the freeway.  He was later located at the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
