Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 2200 Lockwood Drive

December 19, 2019 - Charges have been filed against a suspect who fired shots at Houston police officers at 2200 Lockwood Drive about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 18).

The suspect, Nathaniel Taylor (b/m, 43), is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer, aggravated  assault against a public servant, and felon in possession of a weapon in the 180th State District Court.

The HPD officers who returned fire were not injured in this incident.  Officer D. Shurtleff was sworn in as an HPD officer in September 2018.  Officer G. Fisher was sworn in as an HPD officer in September 2019.  Both are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives M. Millington, L. Lopez, S. Martinez, J. Snook and R. Bass reported:

Patrol officers were dispatched to a suspicious person with a weapon call in the 1400 block of Lockwood Drive.  A concerned citizen contacted police to report the suspicious person pointed a handgun at him while walking in the street.  Officers Fisher and Shurtleff canvassed the area and located a person matching the suspect’s description in the 2200 block of Lockwood Drive.

As officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, later identified as Taylor, he raised a revolver with his right hand and pointed it at them.  Taylor fired his weapon several times, striking the officers’ patrol vehicle.  In response to Taylor’s deadly actions, the two officers discharged their duty weapons multiple times at him.  Taylor sought cover inside his nearby apartment and barricaded himself as responding officers established a perimeter.

Shortly thereafter, HPD SWAT personnel arrived at Taylor’s residence and attempted to persuade him to surrender.  After all attempts failed, SWAT team members served a search warrant at the residence and Taylor was taken into custody without further incident.  Taylor was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released a short time later.
