Update: Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 9000 Westheimer Road
August 27, 2021 - Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 9000 Westheimer Road about 7:20 p.m. last Friday (August 14).
The suspect, Lazarius Harper (b/m, 26), is charged with murder in the 182nd State District Court. A booking photo of Harper is attached to this news release.
Harper is accused in the death of Kevin Kirk, 48, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants R. Watson, E. Attebury and Officer S. Chettry reported:
Officers responded to a crash in the 7900 block of Westheimer Road and were advised the male driver sustained at least one gunshot wound, was unable to maintain control of his vehicle and crashed. The crime scene was located nearby, at the above address.
Prior to the shooting, a group of men on all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes and bicycles surrounded Mr. Kirk's vehicle, kicked the vehicle and tried to open the doors. An unknown suspect, described only as a tall and skinny black male, then fired shots at Kirk as he tried to drive away from the disturbance.
Further investigation identified Harper as a suspect in this case. On Thursday (August 26), officers with the Southwest Patrol Crime Suppression Team located Harper. After a brief foot pursuit, and with the assistance of the HPD Air Support Division and K9 unit, Harper was taken into custody.
