Houston /CompuCycle Partnership Grows to include GREENspot DROPoff for Electronic Scrap Recycling

October 9, 2013 -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker announced today a more comprehensive electronics waste products stewardship program for Houston residents.  Since September 2011, the City has partnered with CompuCycle to provide a permanent electronics recycling drop-off site at CompuCycle headquarters located at 7700 Kempwood and monthly mobile e-waste collections on Saturdays at three City of Houston recycling sites.  With the new expanded service, residents will be able to drop off e-waste free-of-charge at storage facilities participating in the GREENspot DROPoff Houston Program.

“Today, cell phones, computers and other electronics are affordable for the masses and as technology continues to grow at an exponential rate, the pressure to constantly upgrade is a part of modern life,” said Mayor Parker.     “Electronics can often have hazardous components and in the age of disposable e-waste, it is important to keep those materials out of the waste stream and out of the environment.  Our partnership with CompuCycle and GREENspot DROPoff will help us manage and recycle those materials.”

Residents dropping off e-waste at a GREENspot affiliated storage location site will be directed where to place the material.  Once enough material is accumulated CompuCycle, a certified e-waste recycler, will go by and pick up the material and take it to their facility for processing.

Currently, there are over thirty (30) locations throughout the city where residents can drop off e-waste, with the goal to add an additional twenty (20) locations by the end of the year.

Here are some examples of everyday items that are recycled with GREENspot: Televisions | Fax Machines | Computer Monitors | DVD Players |  Laptops | VCR / Beta | Keyboards | Cables & Cords Printers | Radios | Computer Mice | Stereo Components | Hard Drives | Tape & Zip Drives.
