Council Member Jerry Davis
Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Jerry V. Davis has been an advocate for his community since he graduated from Washington College in 1995. He followed in his parents’ footsteps, earning his teaching certification form University of St. Thomas shortly after graduation. VMPT Davis served as an educator for nearly a decade – coaching and mentoring students in Houston-area schools. During this time, VMPT Davis obtained a Master’s in Education Administration from Prairie View A&M University. VMPT Davis was inspired by his experience as a teacher to assist students who he saw fall through the cracks, leading to the creation of Making It Better(MIB). MIB is a local 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to address the severe disadvantages faced by low-income children in the Houston area by providing them with academic intervention, positive activities, and adult role models. As the CEO of Making It Better, VMPT Davis has built a successful nonprofit with an annual budget of over $450K. VMPT Davis is also an entrepreneur, and continues to manage his investment firm, EIH Investments, LLC, today.
Serving as Council Member, VMPT Davis has been instrumental in enhancing the way that Council Members are able to serve their districts; he was an original co-sponsor of a budget amendment creating the Council District Service Fund (CDSF) which allows Council Members to fund small projects in their districts that focus on creating safer, more inviting communities. Through sponsoring and co-sponsoring other budget amendments, VMPT Davis has helped create new initiatives; providing funding for a program to combat illegal dumping, funding educational opportunities with after-school programs, and supporting the development of a youth summer jobs program for the City of Houston. As a strong advocate for the 2012 Parks Bond, VMPT Davis was instrumental in increasing the City’s investment in parks and greenspaces in District B. VMPT Davis is currently serving in his third term as District B Council member and his second term as Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, a position that is elected by his fellow Council Members. He chairs City Council’s Economic Development Committee and sits on the Houston-Galveston Area Council as a City of Houston representative.
Jerry is married to his longtime sweetheart, Rachel Andress, with whom he has three beautiful children, Dean, Rylie and Ryan.
