Incident at 444 Northwest Mall

July 22, 2015 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by a Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy that occurred at 444 Northwest Mall about 3 a.m. on Monday (July 20).

The suspect, Juan Adolfo Ibarra (H/m, 24), was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy who discharged his duty weapon was not injured in the incident.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers M. Coleman and T. Tyler reported:

Four Harris County Sheriff’s Deputies were working an extra job at the Chapa Night Club at the above address and were attempting to clear the parking lot after the club had closed.  For some unknown reason, Ibarra began firing a weapon into the large crowd of people attempting to leave the parking lot.  All four deputies saw and heard the gunshots and two began running towards Ibarra.  As the two deputies approached Ibarra, they both gave verbal commands to Ibarra to show his hands.  Ibarra ignored the commands and began running alongside a pickup truck and firing the gun.  Ibarra then turned to the deputies with the weapon in hand.  One deputy, in fear of his life and for the safety of the people around him, discharged his duty weapon at least one time.  Ibarra was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.  Ibarra’s gun was recovered at the scene.

As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a duty weapon in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
