Investigation into Fatal Crash at 7499 Southwest Freeway


July 5, 2016 - Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 7499 Southwest Freeway (South U. S. Highway 59) about 1 a.m. on Monday (July 4).  

The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. 

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Thomas and Officer J. Baker reported:  

The driver of a black Volkswagen was disabled in a moving lane of traffic on the northbound side of the Southwest Freeway when it was struck by a Kia Soul, also northbound on the freeway.  A flatbed wrecker driver witnessed the accident, stopped behind both vehicles and turned on his emergency lights.   Moments later, the driver a red Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling northbound on the freeway struck the rear right side of the wrecker and lost control of the vehicle.  The driver (victim) was ejected and died at the scene.  The pickup truck then sideswiped the Volkswagen, injuring the driver, who was transported to an area hospital in an unknown condition.  

The driver of the Kia was detained at the scene.  He was questioned and released pending further investigation.
