May 25, 2016 - Charges have been filed against a suspect wounded by a Houston police officer at 6700 Joyner Street about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday (May 24).

The suspect, Lonnie David Giles (w/m, 30), is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant in the 337th State District Court.  Giles sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be treated.
A photo of Giles is attached to this news release.

Sergeant D. Vega, who discharged his duty weapon, suffered injuries to his right hand and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment.  Sergeant Vega is assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in March 1986.

HPD Homicide Division Officers M. Arrington and C. Sharp reported:

Sergeant Vega was investigating a report of a stolen vehicle (a brown 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck) from Pasadena, Texas.  The sergeant located and followed Giles in the stolen vehicle.  Giles then abandoned the pickup truck and then got into another vehicle (a green Dodge pickup truck) driven by a second suspect.  Sergeant Vega followed both suspects in the Dodge until they reached the intersection of 5700 Corl and Joyner.  As the suspect vehicle attempted to turn westbound onto Joyner, the vehicle crashed.  The sergeant pulled his vehicle behind the the Dodge and blocked it in.

The driver of the Dodge then exited the vehicle and fled on foot westbound on Joyner.  Giles then slid into the driver's seat of the pickup, put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated at a high rate of speed toward Sergeant Vega and his vehicle.  Fearing for his life, Sergeant Vega discharged his duty weapon several times at the oncoming vehicle.  The pickup truck struck the driver's side door of Sergeant Vega's vehicle and pinned him inside his vehicle, injuring his hand.  Giles then fled in the vehicle southbound on Corl Street.

Giles was later located in the 600 block of Main Street in Pasadena and was taken into custody by HPD officers.  He was found to have sustained several gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital.   The second suspect was taken into custody a few blocks from the shooting scene.  He was questioned and released with no charges filed.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
