Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 10900 Southwest Freeway

October 17, 2016 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 10900 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 8:10 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 15).

The suspect, Stephen Alan Cook (w/m, 45), is charged with intoxicated manslaughter and two counts of intoxicated assault in the 180th State District Court for his role in the death of one woman and injuries to two other females.  A photo of Cook is attached to this news release.

The identity of the deceased female, 62, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.  The two other females, 30 and 15 years of age, were transported to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Thomas and Officer D. Robinson reported:

Cook was driving a green Mercury Grand Marquis northbound on the Southwest Freeway in one of the shoulder areas when he stated he noticed two Nissan Altimas parked on the side of the freeway and persons standing outside the vehicles.  When Cook tried to drive back into one of the main lanes, he struck a Chevrolet van.  The impact forced the Marquis to strike one of the Nissan vehicles and injuring both female drivers outside the vehicles.  The older female was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The other driver and a teen-aged passenger were taken to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries.  Cook was taken into custody at the scene, determined to be intoxicated and subsequently charged.
