Officer R. Benavides

Officer R. Benavides of the Eastside Division was dispatched to a robbery call where the victim said he was approached by a suspect who demanded money and threatened him with a knife. A witness yelled at the suspect, and the suspect fled on foot towards a church. Officer Benavides witnessed the suspect attempt to carjack a man for his truck. Officer Benavides attempted to place the suspect into custody, but the suspect resisted arrest and fought with Officer Benavides. The suspect broke free and ran across the street with several officers in foot pursuit including Officer T. Haase and Sergeant E. Payne. The suspect attempted to steal another vehicle that had been left running while Officer Haase ordered him to the ground. Officer Haase was able to turn off the ignition and get the suspect into custody. 

The suspect was charged with robbery and had a lengthy criminal history including prior arrests for robbery. HPD would like to commend these officers for their attention to duty and professionalism in apprehending a dangerous felon.
