Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 5400 North Loop East


August 1, 2016 - Charges are pending against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash that occurred at 5400 North Loop East (North Interstate Highway 610 East) about 1:20 a.m. today (Monday, August 1).

The suspect, Vicente Espino-Mendieta (H/m, 43), has a pending charge of intoxication manslaughter.  A photo of Espino-Mendieta is not available at this time.

The male victim, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant I. Duplechain and Officer R. Bymaster reported:

HPD patrol officers observed a major crash at the above address.  Houston Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene where they pronounced the victim deceased.  Witnesses stated the suspect, Espino-Mendieta, was driving a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck erratically on the Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) before exiting onto the North Loop East.  Espino-Mendieta lost control of his pickup truck near the Lockwood exit, swerved across several lanes of traffic and struck the victim who was operating a black Kawasaki motorcycle.  

Espino-Mendieta was detained at the scene and determined to be impaired.
