Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 6888 Gulf Freeway

December 12, 2016 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at 6888 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) service road about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 10).

The victim, Jaime Hernandez, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Miller and Officer C. Elder reported:

Mr. Hernandez and a friend had cashed checks at a business at 5823 Gulf Freeway service road and, after driving away, they noticed a vehicle was following them as they pulled into a parking lot of an IHOP restaurant at the above address.  Not giving it much thought, Hernandez backed into a space in the parking lot.  At that time, an older model, white four-door vehicle pulled up directly in front of Hernandez's vehicle and two black males exited the white vehicle.  One male, wearing a gray hoodie and described as being in his early 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 130 pounds, was armed with a gun.  He approached the driver's side door and knocked on the window with the gun.  The second male, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and basketball shorts, and described only as being about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 120 pounds with long "puffy afro" hair, approached on the passenger side.  When the armed male made demands to Hernandez, he (Hernandez) placed his vehicle in drive and accelerated to try to flee the robbers.  The gunman then fired several shots, fatally striking Hernandez.  Both suspects then got into the white vehicle, believed to be a Nissan or Honda, driven by a third black male suspect.  The suspects then fled the scene.
