Mayor Turner and Jennifer GranholmLegislative Advocacy - Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm

One June 1, 2021, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm visited Houston to tout a federal clean energy jobs plan, in her first trip outside Washington since taking office. Joining Mayor Sylvester Turner at Greentown Labs clean energy incubator in Midtown Houston the Secretary hosted a roundtable, listening to the concerns of members of Congress and a variety of business and nonprofit leaders and researchers.

The discussion centered on the need for legislation to invest in clean energy businesses, larger in the provisions contained within the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

On September 8, 2022, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm again joined Mayor Sylvester Turner at the training center of Plumbers Local Union #68 to discuss the department’s goal of making geothermal energy available for use on electric grids as well as making engineered geothermal energy systems 90 percent cheaper by 2035.

Clean energy projects such as this are made possible by the IRA. Moreover, IRA offers a 30 percent tax credit for companies who invest in or produce geothermal energy or for families willing to install geothermal heat pumps to their homes. With Houston being the Energy Capital of the world, the U.S. Energy Department looks to Houston for its leadership in energy transition, especially opportunities in geothermal energy for workers already trained in the oil and gas industry.
