Rail

Houston currently has one existing and several planned light-rail lines that will connect major attractions and business/activity centers within Loop 610. The existing 7.5 mile Red Line connects Downtown Houston with Houston Community College, University of Houston Downtown, Rice University, the Museum District, arts and performing theaters, Hermann Park, the Texas Medical Center and Reliant Park. A 5.3 mile expansion north of the Red Line will connect Downtown to the Northline Commons Mall. The 6.6 mile Purple Line will link the southeast portion of Loop 610 with Downtown and terminate at the intersection of MLK and Griggs. The Green Line will run 3.3 miles and connect Downtown with the eastern portion of Loop 610, terminating at the Magnolia Transit Center.

• According the Kinder Houston Area Survey 2012, the majority of residents in Harris County want more taxpayer money to be spent on improving rail and buses rather than on expanding existing highways.


• The Red Line expansion, the Purple Line and the Green Line are scheduled to be complete by 2014.


• The Red Line connects to more than 5 miles of the underground tunnel/skybridge system within downtown connecting over 65 blocks.
