Suspect Arrested in Baby's Death at 10111 Bissonnet

June 22, 2010 - Houston police have arrested a juvenile female in the death of a newborn boy at 10111 Bissonnet about 7 p.m. on April 16.

The suspect, 14, is referred to Harris County juvenile probation authorities on a felony charge of injury to a child.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Semmelrock and Senior Police Officer C.P. Abbey reported:

An investigation was initiated into the death of a newborn after an elementary school student told a counselor she had witnessed the death. Officials contacted the homicide division and investigators determined a 14- year-old female had given birth to the baby at a friend's apartment six days earlier (April 16).

Investigators learned three juveniles, two girls and a boy, were present when the baby was born. The newborn was placed on a mattress and the juveniles described what investigators believe was the amniotic sac covering the baby's head. The newborn was unable to breathe and shortly after, the baby stopped breathing. No adults were present at the time and no one called 9-1-1.

Once the juveniles determined the baby was dead, they wrapped him in a plastic bag and called an adult neighbor. Investigators interviewed the neighbor and he led them to a large dumpster in an apartment complex where he claimed he placed the baby. It was learned the baby and contents of the dumpster were transported to an area landfill. Based on the volume and density of the compacted trash, investigators were unable to search the landfill.

At 2 p.m. TODAY (Tuesday, June 22), an investigator in the HPD Homicide Division will be available to answer questions in this case in the media briefing room on the first floor of HPD Headquarters at 1200 Travis.
