Statement on Investigation into Eight Officers Relieved of Duty

May 4, 2010 - I want to assure the public we will be transparent and open with our findings once the ongoing investigation is completed. Harris County District Attorney Pat Lykos has requested that no evidence be released at this time because it would compromise the integrity of the investigation.

When I first viewed the surveillance tape, I was very concerned. I immediately contacted the Harris County D.A.'s Office to start an independent criminal investigation. At the same time, I ordered the Internal Affairs Division to launch an investigation to identify the officers involved in the incident. Internal Affairs worked to identify the officers and, after determining their identities, they were relieved of duty.

I previously contacted the local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office and made them aware of the incident and assured them of the department’s full cooperation in any subsequent investigation.
