Investigation into Incident at 5400 Bellaire Boulevard

October 24, 2017 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect at 5400 Bellaire Boulevard about 6:55 a.m. today.

The identity of the male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Senior Police Officer T. Conner, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Conner was sworn in as an officer in May 1992 and is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant H. Ruiz, Senior Police Officers J. Barnes and R. Gonzales and Officers M. Glover and N. Krupa reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a robbery in-progress call at a restaurant at 5512 Bellaire Boulevard and found a male matching the description of the robbery suspect walking east on Bellaire toward Chimney Rock.  Officers confronted the suspect, armed with a screw driver and scissors, and gave him verbal commands to drop his weapons and lie on the ground.  The suspect ignored commands and an HPD officer and a responding Bellaire Police officer deployed their Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs), which had no effect on the suspect.  With both weapons in hand, the suspect charged toward Officer Conner.  Fearing for his safety, Officer Conner discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.    Officers recovered the screwdriver and the scissors from the suspect's possession.  He was then transported by HFD paramedics to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
