Suspect Arrested, Charged in Crash at 1700 Southwest Freeway


September 28, 2017 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a crash that critically injured a Houston police officer at 1700 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) about 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 27).

The suspect, Robert Zimmerman (w/m, 79), is charged with intoxication assault in the 184th State District Court.  A photo of Zimmerman is attached to this news release.

The injured officer, Nestor Garcia, 24, is in critical, but stable condition following surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer T. Riley reported:

Officer Garcia was conducting a felony traffic stop on a stolen vehicle at the above address and standing between two police patrol vehicles when he was struck by a white Toyota Highlander driven by Zimmerman.  

Officer Garcia was transported to the hospital.  Zimmerman was determined to be intoxicated and was immediately taken into custody.

The investigation is continuing.
