Back to School Backpack Distribution
Every summer just before the start of term, Mayor Turner’s Back to School event yields extra backpacks which are then allotted to each City Council Member. As an educator and the chair of the Childhood & Youth Committee, schools and the young people served within those walls are of highest priority to Council Member Karla Cisneros. For that reason, she and her staff have delivered a donation of backpacks filled with school supplies to District H Elementary Schools prior to the start of each school year since the 2017-2018 school year. Council Member Cisneros understands that not every student in need is able to attend the various back to school resource fairs prior to the start of the school year, so coordinating with and delivering straight to the schools has proved the most efficient way to reach those students.
This year, Council Member Cisneros distributed 750 backpacks to HISD elementary schools within District H. Twenty-five backpacks were delivered directly to each of the 30 HISD elementary schools. A big thank you to At-Large Council Member Sallie Alcorn for also sharing some of her backpack allotment with District H.
