Help the Office of Talent & Organizational Development welcome it's newest Division Managers, Denise Wyche and Tim Nolan! With backgrounds stretching over corporate, retail, and government industries, both Tim and Denise bring loads of expertise to their management areas. When asked what their hopes and expectations are after joining the City of Houston, Tim and Denise mentioned great things regarding initiatives and opportunities for the City of Houston workforce.

"My passion is finding ways to make things better. That comes through from past experiences with process improvement initiatives (Lean, 6Sigma, PDCA, etc.) to building high-performing teams and training. Whatever my position title, I've been fortunate to have leaders and mentors entrust me with opportunities to run special projects and improvement initiatives in addition to what was in my job description. Those experiences taught me how to apply what I learned to impact sustainable change and empower others to do likewise.”

"My previous experience has been in the private sector where I started in retail sales and management, I transitioned to a sales and account management role, finally moving into a training role that allowed me to pursue my passion for helping people learn and grow. In various training roles, I had the opportunity to lead training teams in large and small organizations and build a training department from the ground up. This diverse experience allows me to bring a unique perspective and open mind to the Office of Talent and Organizational Development."

"As the "OD" of the OT&OD Team we collaborate with our colleagues to fulfill our Department's mission and values. As we're working on process design, a purpose statement emerged which probably sums up our plans for OD. Our aim is to shape a culture of employee engagement, data-based problem-solving, systems thinking, and organizational excellence at the City of Houston."

"We're here to help shape a vibrant COH culture, but the real message I want to convey is we are one COH. This means every employee and member of the OneHouston Team can be a catalyst for continuous improvement and positive change. OD’s role is to partner with COH leadership and share tools and best practices to help COH be the best we can be."

"We are adding new team members to the Training Team that will focus on learner engagement to help employees immediately implement what they learn in the classroom back on the job. By focusing on adult learning principles and highly engaging facilitation techniques, we are committed to making all our programs exciting and impactful."

"Getting to know the COH. I love interacting with people at every level in an organization to find out how they do their work. We're currently working on an effort where everyone in the organization will be able to provide their input as to what they think our strengths are, what we do well and where we can make things better."

"Short-term I am looking forward to seeing OT&OD return to their pre-pandemic role of developing city employees. Long-term, I believe that through the employees we train, we can benefit the citizens of Houston.

"There's a tie for most exciting. I'm so honored for this opportunity to make a difference in what I consider one of the coolest places on the planet! Although it's Houston's summers that kept me living in Florida until now. The other is being able to live near my family who have been Houstonians since the 80's. I've not lived in the same city as my dear Mommy for over 30 years. That alone is priceless and makes every day exciting for me."

"The most exciting thing so far for me since joining the city of Houston workforce has been engaging with so many fantastic city employees who genuinely want to make Houston a better place. I have also been amazed by all the services the city provides to the community, many of which I was unaware of prior to starting here."

The Office of Talent & Organizational Development is excited to see what Tim and Denise accomplish alongside their collective teams and the division overall. Once again, welcome to the City of Houston!

FROM THE CLO

Insights from the Chief Learning Officer

Hello City of Houston Learning Community! Since our last newsletter, a couple of significant things have happened for OT&OD.

We started the new year with seven vacancies for a team of 18. I am thrilled to share that we hired Denise Wyche, Organizational Development Division Manager, and Tim Nolan, Training Division Manager (spotlighted above) as well as Gideon Peterson, Organizational Development Analyst, and Yulanda Glover, Senior Trainer. They each bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, ideas, and passion for the workplace learning environment. We aim to fill the remaining three vacancies in the coming months.

In late February, COVID precautions were lifted. Some departments were excited to start hosting their meetings and trainings here at E.B. Cape Center. In fact, there were a few days where the building was buzzing with its pre-pandemic energy. As our Team begins scheduling in-person classes again, we look forward to regaining the momentum we had pre-COVID, and then some! (Please know that we still have hand sanitizer, masks, and the temperature screening kiosk available for use. We understand that some may still be concerned about COVID, and we respect that.)

In closing, we are working diligently to solidify our strategic direction for the coming years. Expect to hear more about it in our next newsletter. Until then, Happy Learning!
